Turkey warns drivers that chip‑license codes can trigger fines and insurance loss
Turkey’s new chip‑enabled driver licences contain a 12‑th field with restriction codes that specify which vehicles a driver may operate and what health checks are required. Code 102 bars holders from driving ambulances, official or commercial vehicles such as panel vans and courier motorcycles. Code 103 obliges drivers with conditions like diabetes, epilepsy, sleep‑apnea or heart disease to undergo periodic health examinations, with the frequency indicated by sub‑codes (e.g., 103‑01 for yearly checks).
These codes are entered by Provincial Health Directorate commissions after reviewing medical reports. Drivers who ignore the restrictions can face administrative fines, temporary suspension of their licence, and may be treated as at‑fault in accidents, leading insurers to refuse or recoup payments. Police traffic checks routinely verify compliance with the codes, even when the driver’s licence class otherwise permits the vehicle.
The regulations aim to improve road safety and ensure that drivers with specific health concerns are regularly monitored, but they also impose significant financial and legal consequences for non‑compliance.
