Turkey opposes US decision to extend arms embargo lift for Greek Cyprus

Turkey has expressed strong opposition to the United States' decision to extend the lifting of the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration until September 30, 2027. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense stated that this move could negatively impact the delicate balance and security environment on Cyprus. TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel characterized the decision as a direct national security issue that threatens the safety of the Turkish Cypriot people and regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Simultaneously, tensions have escalated regarding Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's visit to Kastellorizo. Turkish defense officials argued that the presence of military personnel and warships on the island violates its demilitarized status under the 1947 Treaty of Paris. In response, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected these claims, asserting that defending its territory is a sovereign right and that Turkey's accusations regarding the demilitarization of Aegean islands lack legal basis.
