Turkey warns of difficult Black Sea shipping compromise
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that Ukraine and Russia hold conflicting positions that make reaching a compromise on Black Sea maritime security difficult. Turkey has proposed an agreement protocol to both Kyiv and Moscow aimed at halting attacks on commercial vessels, a move driven by the need to protect global grain shipments and mitigate significant losses to Turkish shipping interests.
According to the Turkish Maritime Chamber of Commerce (Imeak), at least 90 ships were attacked in August, with approximately 25 to 30 of those belonging to Turkish companies. While Ankara previously called for a moratorium on attacks in high-risk maritime zones, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the idea, claiming such a measure would be ‘impossible to monitor.’
Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions remain high as Ukrainian forces continue to use drones to target vessels, aiming to disrupt the transport of Russian grain and hydrocarbons.
