Turkey warns public against swimming in dams and irrigation canals

The General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) issued a safety alert urging citizens to stay away from dams, reservoirs, flood gates, regulators and irrigation channels during the hot summer months. It warned that water depths can change abruptly, bottoms may be uneven, and mud‑like sediments can trap swimmers. Cold water can cause cramps, hypothermia and increased drowning risk, while the low buoyancy of fresh water further endangers those who enter.

Diving instructor Mehmet Aktan echoed the warning, highlighting recent drowning incidents in rivers, ponds and irrigation canals. He stressed that strong currents, hidden drop‑offs and slippery banks make these sites especially hazardous for people who cannot swim. Aktan urged families to supervise children closely and to use designated swimming pools instead of unsupervised waterways, noting that a moment of inattention can lead to lifelong injuries or death.
