Turkey's 12-Year Compulsory Education Criticized by Yeni Şafak Writer

Yusuf Kaplan, a columnist for the Turkish daily Yeni Şafak, argues that the 12‑year compulsory education system is a fundamental threat to Turkey. He describes it as “Turkey’s suicide” and says it produces a generation that is “individualistic, selfish, hedonistic and soulless,” lacking cultural and historical identity.

Kaplan claims the system fuels unemployment, delays marriage and child‑bearing, and weakens industry by creating a shortage of skilled workers. He warns that without abolishing the policy, “dynamite will be laid that could blow the country apart.” The writer calls for an immediate end to the 12‑year mandatory schooling, asserting that its continuation would collapse families, society, and the nation’s future.
