Turkey's Aksungur drone completes submarine detection mission

The Turkish Aksungur unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) successfully completed a reconnaissance mission to detect submarines during the ‘Torna S26’ unmanned naval systems maneuvers off the coast of Antalya.

Operating via satellite control, the drone launched from an airbase in Ankara and traveled to the Mediterranean mission area. During the operation, the aircraft descended to 1,000 feet to deploy three ‘Asel Buoy 100B’ underwater acoustic monitoring systems, developed by Aselsan, along with one sonobuoy, using a specialized container. After deployment, the drone ascended to 6,000 feet to begin signal interception.

The Aksungur flew for approximately four hours, transmitting collected acoustic data to a processing center at the ground control station in Ankara. This mission marks the first time an ‘Asel Buoy’ system has been deployed into the sea from a drone.

The ‘Torna S26’ maneuvers, which began on October 19 and are scheduled to run until October 27, 2026, aim to evaluate national unmanned platforms and develop tactical procedures for integrated operations between manned and unmanned naval systems.
