Turkey's AKYA torpedo hits target ship in naval drill

Turkey announced that its domestically‑developed AKYA heavyweight torpedo successfully struck the target vessel M/G Sokullu Mehmet Paşa on 11 June during the Denizkurdu‑II 2026 naval exercise. The weapon was launched from the submarine TCG Sakarya and hit the target with precise impact, demonstrating the capability of the Turkish defence industry.

Developed by ROKETSAN in partnership with TÜBİTAK and the Naval Research Center (ARMERKOM), the 533 mm AKYA is designed for use by the Turkish Navy’s submarine fleet against both submarines and surface ships. Turkish officials highlighted that the system allows the country to end its reliance on foreign torpedoes such as the German DM2A4 and the U.S. Mk48, marking a strategic step toward full domestic self‑sufficiency in heavy torpedo technology.

The defence ministry’s release stated, “The AKYA achieved an immediate hit, destroying the target, showcasing once again the technological level of Turkey’s defence industry.”
