Turkey's AKYA torpedo test alarms Greece

Turkey's defence firm Roketsan showcased its domestically developed AKYA heavy torpedo during the Denizkurdu‑II/2026 naval exercise in June. The torpedo, described as a high‑speed, long‑range (about 102 km), autonomous weapon with fiber‑optic guidance and active/passive sonar, was fired from a Turkish warship and hit a target at sea. Greek media reacted strongly, warning that the system poses a significant risk to Athens and stating that "time is running out" for the country.

The drill also featured a Bayraktar TB3 unmanned aerial vehicle launched from the amphibious ship TCG Anadolu, which simulated a kamikaze attack on an Aselsan‑built Albatros unmanned surface vessel, demonstrating further Turkish capabilities in both manned and unmanned maritime combat systems.
