Turkey’s deposit recycling system cited as global model by The Times

The British publication The Times has described Turkey’s Deposit Management System as ‘one of the most advanced deposit return systems in the world.’ The report highlights the model as an exemplary application for the United Kingdom, particularly regarding the retention of resources within the country and the reintegration of strategic raw materials into the economy.

Turkey’s system utilizes QR codes, digital tracking infrastructure, and automated return machines. Through this process, citizens can return recyclable packaging and receive deposit amounts directly into digital wallets. The system has an annual processing capacity of approximately 25 billion units of packaging.

Beyond environmental benefits, the system provides significant economic impact. It is reported to contribute approximately $1 billion toward reducing Turkey’s current account deficit and has created 20,000 jobs. Murat Kurum, the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, noted that well-designed deposit return systems provide high-quality recycled materials to industry and ensure higher collection and recycling rates.
