Turkey's diesel price cut largely offset by tax recoupment

The Turkish government announced a 2.41 TL per litre reduction in diesel prices effective from Thursday night, but the newly applied "Eşel Mobil" mechanism will divert 1.81 TL of that cut to compensate for past special consumption tax (ÖTV) losses. As a result, drivers will see a net discount of only about 0.60 TL per litre at the pump.

Industry sources note that the large headline reduction stems from falling global oil prices and exchange‑rate movements, yet the tax‑offset system limits the benefit to consumers. No further price changes are expected in the immediate term, and current listings show diesel prices of around 64‑66 TL per litre in Istanbul, Ankara and İzmir.

The policy illustrates how Turkey’s fuel‑price framework balances market fluctuations with fiscal recovery, offering only modest relief to motorists despite the headline discount.
