Turkey's Education Minister Yusuf Tekin faces scrutiny over school safety and teacher workload

CHP MP Gizem Özcan submitted a parliamentary inquiry asking Education Minister Yusuf Tekin to explain why schools in Marmaris and elsewhere in Muğla were closed for earthquake‑risk reasons yet no demolition, reinforcement or reconstruction work had progressed. She said the closures forced families to bear extra transport costs and demanded transparent timelines for reopening safe schools.

Labor Party MP Sevda Karaca raised the killing of student Meliha Keskin on the Erciyes University campus, pressing Tekin to detail university responsibility, campus‑security measures and the lack of gender‑based protection units. She also asked whether any administrative action had been taken against the university rector.

Education‑Union leader Özkan Rona, after police obstructed his attempts to meet Tekin in Bursa, reported that court orders to strengthen school buildings were not being applied by the local education directorate. He also highlighted the excessive reporting burden on teachers, noting reports can require hundreds of pages per student, and said Tekin promised to shorten the forms and shift professional development to online delivery.
