Turkey's Education Ministry launches 2026‑2030 Climate Action Plan

Turkey's Ministry of National Education (MEB) has published the "Climate Change Action Plan 2026‑2030". The plan aims to raise climate awareness in schools, teach sustainable living skills, and prepare individuals to take active roles against climate change. It builds on the 2022‑2025 initiative and outlines 10 topics, 10 goals, 33 targets and 69 activities spanning curriculum development, green school infrastructure, waste and water management, and international cooperation.

The plan makes climate‑related education compulsory for teachers, with mandatory online training modules delivered through the OBÂ system. Regional climate‑education needs analyses will tailor programs to local environmental challenges, while digital tools will support interactive teaching. Performance criteria will be used to monitor implementation and effectiveness.

Education Minister Yusuf Tekin emphasized that environmental consciousness should become a lifelong culture starting from early childhood, linking it to the nation’s broader responsibility to the planet. The plan also promotes practices such as zero‑waste management, recycling, rain‑water harvesting, composting, and agro‑ecological activities within schools.
