Turkey warns Greece over Aegean island militarization
Tensions between Greece and Turkey have escalated following statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the militarization of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Speaking after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan, Erdoğan urged Athens to abandon its current course and respect international treaties, asserting that Turkey does not seek territorial expansion but will defend its rights. He warned that interpreting Turkey's calm approach as weakness would be a mistake.
In response, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerepetritis emphasized that Greece remains committed to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He stated that there is no room for concession regarding Greek sovereignty and sovereign rights. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also addressed the situation, asserting that Greece is a peaceful nation and will not accept instructions on how to strengthen its defensive capabilities.
The dispute centers on Turkey's claim that certain Aegean islands should maintain a demilitarized status, a position Athens rejects, arguing that international treaties do not impose a general demilitarization regime on the islands.
