Turkey's funeral homes and public festivals face criticism for commercial excess

Commentators argue that Turkish funeral homes (taziye evleri) have shifted from solemn mourning spaces to venues for large meals and political discussion. The Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı states that providing food to mourners is prohibited, especially when funded from the deceased’s inheritance, echoing the warning that “Taziye Evleri Ziyafet Yeri Değildir!”.

Another cultural critic contends that modern Turkish festivals and carnivals have become commercial spectacles, filled with neon lighting, loud noise and consumer‑driven activities. He warns that the “Kopan Gürültüde Kültürün Hayât Veren Sükûtunu Duyabilmek” is being lost as cultural events turn into profit‑focused entertainments, diluting their spiritual purpose.
