Turkey's Iztuzu and Belek beaches record sea turtle nesting surge

At Iztuzu Beach near Dalyan in Muğla Province, the number of nesting sites for the endangered caretta caretta sea turtle reached 400, a record for the area. The increase was credited to the coordinated efforts of the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER) and local volunteers who have been protecting the nests since May.

On nearby Belek Beach in Antalya's Serik district, the first hatchlings of the season emerged on 11 July after a two‑month incubation period. Project leader Dr. Fuat Ali Canbolat noted that more than 1,800 nests have been recorded this season and emphasized that the nests are continuously monitored, urging beachgoers to limit artificial lighting to ensure safe passage for the newborn turtles.
