Turkey's KADEM Holds Istanbul Workshop on Fair Alimony Reform

The Women and Democracy Foundation (KADEM) organized a legal workshop in Istanbul titled “Fair Balance in Alimony Regulations.” The event brought together ministry officials, academics, judges and lawyers to examine the legal, social, humanitarian and economic aspects of alimony.

KADEM board chair Av. Dr. Canan Sarı emphasized that alimony has long been a prominent issue in Turkey’s public agenda and called for reforms that protect women’s and children’s economic rights without creating new hardships. She noted the economic risks faced by women who have been out of the workforce due to caregiving responsibilities.

Law Council chair Av. Elif Şeker added that any new regulations must strike a fair balance, safeguarding women while not imposing disproportionate burdens on the paying spouse. The workshop’s recommendations are intended to contribute to ongoing family‑law reform and promote social justice.
