Turkey's media crackdown spotlighted at NATO summit

During the NATO summit hosted by Turkey, the Turkish President’s Communication Presidency displayed a book titled *Accurate Reporting and Media Ethics*. The book stresses that “the public comes first” and outlines principles of press freedom, the presumption of innocence, and balanced election coverage. British journalist Sophia Yan posted a photo of the book on social media, commenting that it came from “a country that regularly detains journalists.”

A Turkish journalist who has covered previous NATO meetings noted that the summit was marked by the absence of any questions about the detention of opposition mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has been held for over a year on charges seeking up to 2,430 years in prison. Reporters from independent Turkish outlets were denied accreditation, and many journalists were arrested, leaving the press unable to raise the issue at the summit despite its relevance to democracy and the rule of law.
