Turkey's Ministry of National Education proposes teacher aprons
The Turkish Ministry of National Education has issued a circular encouraging teachers to wear aprons to enhance institutional reputation and professional dignity. This move has reignited debates regarding dress codes and individual freedoms within the public sector.
Eğitim-Bir-Sen, the largest union in the education sector, released a statement addressing the controversy. The union clarified that its ongoing civil disobedience campaign for free clothing, which began in 2013, does not conflict with the Ministry's new regulation. The union stated that they do not view the Ministry's move as having malicious intent, comparing the pursuit of professional attire to that of doctors or judges.
However, the union emphasized that a balance between professional responsibility and individual freedom cannot be achieved through imposition or pressure. They called for the Public Personnel Consultative Board (KPDK) to intervene and facilitate a permanent, comprehensive regulation that respects national values, professional dignity, and the rights of employees.
