Turkey's MIT shuts down large credit‑card fraud network
On the night of 7 June, thousands of citizens received SMS messages warning of high‑value credit‑card transactions and one‑time passwords. The alerts were identified as part of an organized cyber‑crime operation.
The National Intelligence Organization (MIT) coordinated with the Cyber Security Presidency, the Gendarmerie General Command and the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK). Simultaneous raids were conducted in Istanbul and Kocaeli, resulting in the arrest of three suspects. Seized digital material included software that automatically tested large numbers of credit‑card details and generated the alert SMSes, as well as extensive logs and data‑sets classifying the tested cards.
Authorities said no monetary loss occurred, but the dismantled network had the capacity to affect a wide public. The operation demonstrates a coordinated response to large‑scale financial‑cyber threats.
