Turkey's NATO prominence rises at summit, sparking criticism from Greece

The NATO summit held in Istanbul in July 2026 highlighted a significant upgrade of Turkey’s strategic role within the alliance. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured two new NATO commands – a naval headquarters in Istanbul and a land headquarters in Adana – extending Turkish influence from the Black Sea, through the Straits, to the Eastern Mediterranean, including the Aegean Sea.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the meeting but was portrayed as a passive observer, prompting domestic criticism that Greece was being marginalised despite its long‑standing contributions to NATO. The summit also announced a direct NATO funding package of $50 billion for Ukraine and discussed U.S. arms sales to Turkey, including engines for the indigenous Kaan fighter and possible F‑15 deliveries. Greek political figures, including opposition leader Alexis Tsipras, denounced the outcomes as a diplomatic defeat for Greece and warned of potential electoral repercussions.
