Turkey's Opticians' Union cautions against cheap counterfeit sunglasses

As summer approaches, Turkish optometry officials warned consumers that many inexpensive sunglasses sold online are counterfeit and lack proper UV protection, posing serious eye‑health risks. Ayhan Demircan, head of the Turkish Opticians‑Goggles Association, emphasized that only products sold through licensed optician shops are reliably inspected and meet health standards, noting that certifications such as UV400, CE or TSE alone are insufficient without verified testing. He also pointed out that price should be a key indicator, with offers far below market value often signalling fake items.

Ibrahim Güllü, deputy chair of the Consumer Confederation, echoed the advice, urging shoppers to buy from verified sellers, review product descriptions for UV400 claims and certification details, and use secure payment methods. Both officials highlighted that fake sunglasses not only cause financial loss but can also damage the eyes, and that consumers may invoke legal rights under Turkey’s consumer protection law if they receive defective goods.
