Travertine Set Lake Otlukbeli Draws Tourists to Erzincan

Otlukbeli Lake, located about 7 km from the centre of Otlukbeli district in Erzincan Province, is a rare travertine set lake formed by mineral waters rather than typical karst processes. Covering roughly 7 500 m² with depths up to 20 m, the lake’s length varies between 150‑160 m and its width between 30‑50 m depending on the season.

The lake has been designated a natural site by the Erzurum Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Board and is promoted as a “natural monument”. It attracts both domestic and foreign visitors for its red‑toned waters, scenic surroundings and purported health benefits, especially for rheumatic conditions. Local resident Kenan Bahadır highlighted that it is the only lake of its type worldwide.

Tourism officials note that Otlukbeli Lake’s unique geology and landscape have made it a focal point for nature‑based travel in the region.
