Turkey's parliament speaker urges new constitution to boost global competitiveness

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş addressed a panel titled “Parliament and Constitution’s 150th Year: A Sultan, A Coup, A Constitution” at Galatasaray University in Beşiktaş. He argued that Turkey must draft a new, modern constitution that will remove all obstacles, strengthen the nation’s global competitive edge, and protect it from regional and worldwide threats.

Kurtulmuş highlighted the historical pattern of constitutions being adopted after military coups in 1876, 1961 and 1982, and stressed that today the constitution should be created solely by the nation’s democratic will, free from the shadows of past coups. He called for a participatory, pluralistic charter to be finalized by 2026‑2027, positioning it as a cornerstone for Turkey’s future security and prosperity amid a world he described as a “battlefield of crises.”
