Turkey readies Ankara for NATO summit with security upgrades and diplomatic outreach

Turkey is preparing to host the NATO summit on 7‑8 July in Ankara after a NATO Parliamentary Assembly was held in Istanbul. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan used the Istanbul meeting to stress the alliance’s need for unity, balanced burden‑sharing and Turkey’s inclusion in European defence initiatives, while also condemning the Gaza and Lebanon crises and urging a two‑state solution for Palestine.

Turkey’s parliamentary speaker Numan Kurtulmuş met with Estonian parliament president Lauri Hussar and other NATO parliamentarians, promoting deeper parliamentary cooperation and highlighting Turkey’s growing defence‑industry capacity as a contribution to NATO.

In Ankara, police have imposed maximum security levels, conducting vehicle and identity checks at strategic points, issuing fines for traffic violations and restricting movement to ensure order during the summit. The government is also showcasing Turkish regional specialties, such as Corum leblebi, to the visiting leaders. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the upcoming summit as a “historic turning point” for trans‑Atlantic relations. These coordinated diplomatic, security and cultural efforts underscore the summit’s significance for NATO and regional stability.
