Turkey's Renewable Power Share Reaches Record High in May

In May, renewable energy sources supplied 72.3% of Turkey’s electricity generation, the highest share in 26 years. On 24 May at 13:00, renewables accounted for 84% of instantaneous generation, a 12‑year record. Coal’s contribution fell to 17%, the lowest level in 22 years.

Hydroelectric plants were the main driver, producing 11.71 billion kWh and covering 43.1% of total output; hydro generation rose 58% year‑on‑year thanks to above‑average rainfall. Solar and wind together supplied about 23% of electricity.

Overall daily production reached 1.048 million MWh, slightly ahead of consumption at 1.043 million MWh. Peak demand occurred at 14:00 with 48,685 MWh, while the lowest demand was at 06:00 with 35,810 MWh. Turkey exported 9,653 MWh of electricity and imported 4,111 MWh, finishing the day as a net exporter.
