Turkey prepares modest July pension hike amid inflation gap for civil servants

Turkish officials estimate that cumulative inflation for the first five months of 2024 reached 16.60%, while the collective bargaining formula grants civil‑service retirees a 4‑month increase of 10.51%, rising to 12.40% with May’s inflation. This leaves pensioners about 4.2 percentage points below the official consumer‑price index.

Projections based on a six‑month inflation range of 17.5 %–18.5 % suggest a total July salary rise of roughly 14 % for civil‑service retirees, bringing the lowest pension to between 23,500 TL and 31,800 TL, depending on the calculation method. The ruling AK Party is said to be preparing the necessary regulation, while experts and unions warn that the current collective‑agreement ceiling offers no additional “seyyanen” (extra) increase.

Stakeholders call for the pension gap with private‑sector retirees to be closed and for any raise to at least match inflation, arguing that the existing scheme disadvantages civil‑service pensioners despite higher contribution rates during their working lives.
