Northern Cyprus leaders commemorate 1 August Social Resistance Day
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel marked 1 August — the Turkish Cypriot "Toplumsal Direniş Bayramı" — by recalling three historic milestones: the 1571 Ottoman conquest of Cyprus, the 1958 founding of the Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT), and the 1976 establishment of the Security Forces Command. He pledged that the Turkish Cypriot people will forever safeguard their independence.
Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı also issued a message, describing the day as a symbol of the Turkish Cypriot community’s struggle for existence and urging unity, peace and continued dedication to the Republic’s future. Professor Osman M. Karatepe reiterated that the holiday has been legally recognised since 1984 and highlighted its significance as a reminder of past sacrifices and collective resilience.
President Tufan Erhürman, reflecting on United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres’ recent visit, said the situation on the island is now “more correct” than before the visit. He called for the implementation of the proposed 5 + 1 talks, urging both sides to complete the necessary “homework” to advance a settlement.
