Turkey's Short-Term External Debt Hits Record in April
Turkey's short‑term external debt (KVDB) rose by 3% in April, reaching $171.6 billion, according to data released by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB). The portion of debt with a remaining maturity of one year or less hit a new record of $242 billion.
Bank‑originated short‑term external debt grew 5.8% to $75.5 billion, while domestic banks' short‑term borrowing from abroad increased 4.1% to $8.7 billion. Foreign‑residence banks' deposits in Turkey rose 6.7% to $18.6 billion, and foreign‑residence non‑bank foreign‑exchange deposits grew 1.9% to $22.2 billion, with Turkish‑lira‑denominated deposits up 9.2% to $26 billion. Other sectors’ short‑term external debt rose 2.8% to $71.4 billion. Within the overall KVDB stock, the share of the US dollar and euro fell, while the Turkish lira and other currencies increased, composing 24.5% and 14.0% of the total respectively.
