Turkey Health Officials Warn of Heatstroke Risks Amid Summer Heat

Turkey’s health authorities are issuing widespread warnings as a prolonged heat wave pushes temperatures above 40 °C. The Mersin Metropolitan Municipality’s Health Department advises vulnerable groups—elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses—to stay hydrated, drink at least 2‑3 litres of water daily, wear loose cotton clothing, and avoid outdoor activity between 10:00 and 16:00. Regional Health Director Mehmet Erşan stresses that heatstroke symptoms include rapid heartbeat, nausea, confusion and can lead to organ failure if not treated within 30 minutes.

Veterinary officials also caution pet owners to provide fresh water, keep animals out of direct sun and maintain up‑to‑date parasite vaccinations. Nutrition experts highlight the need for mineral replenishment alongside fluid intake and warn that improper food storage in hot weather raises the risk of food‑borne illness.

Medical specialists across the country, including Prof. Dr. Fahriye Vatansever Ağca, note that dehydration stresses the cardiovascular system, potentially causing hypertension, tachycardia, and, in severe cases, heart attacks. They recommend limiting sun exposure, using hats or umbrellas, and seeking immediate medical help if symptoms such as dizziness, severe headache, or difficulty breathing appear.
