Turkey’s Supreme Court backs divorce on basis of frequent job changes
A young woman filed for divorce in a Turkish family court, alleging that her husband neglected his marital duties, frequently consumed alcohol, insulted her, failed to meet household needs and constantly changed jobs. The lower court accepted her petition and granted the divorce.
The husband appealed, but the Court of Cassation’s (Yargıtay) 2nd Civil Chamber upheld the family court’s ruling. The court held that the husband’s persistent job changes, combined with neglect of his spouse and regular alcohol use, constituted serious fault and a sufficient ground for divorce, and it dismissed the appeal.
