Turkey's Supreme Court overturns ruling on Ahmet Kaya biopic

Turkey's Supreme Court (Yargıtay) has overturned previous rulings regarding the film ‘İki Gözüm Ahmet’, which depicts the life of the late musician Ahmet Kaya. The decision comes after a long-standing legal battle initiated by Kaya's family, including his wife Gülten Kaya, in 2020.

Previously, lower courts had rejected the family's request to halt the film's release, classifying the work as an anonymous creation. However, the Supreme Court's 4th Civil Chamber ruled that the family's consent was not obtained and noted that the film includes fictionalized events and characters concerning Kaya's private life, which may infringe upon personal rights.

The case will now be heard again in the Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance.
