Turkey's Supreme Court Sets Precedent Recognizing 'I Regret Marrying You' as Grounds for Divorce

Turkey’s Supreme Court (Yargıtay) 2nd Civil Chamber affirmed a family‑court decision that repeated statements such as “Seninle evlendiğime pişmanım” (“I regret marrying you”) constitute emotional abuse and qualify as fault in divorce proceedings. The case involved a young couple who filed mutual divorce actions, alleging physical and psychological violence, neglect of their child with familial Mediterranean fever, and the husband’s stock‑market addiction. The first‑instance family court found the husband heavily at fault, granting the mother custody, ordering child support of 600 TL, and awarding material and moral damages of 18 000 TL each. The regional appellate court later increased the compensation amounts. Yargıtay upheld these rulings, establishing the precedent that such degrading remarks are a recognized ground for divorce and may be cited in future cases.
