Turkey's Supreme Court rules husband insulting wife's cooking is heavy fault in divorce

Turkey’s Supreme Court (Yargıtay) 2nd Civil Chamber upheld a lower‑court ruling in a divorce case, finding the husband heavily at fault for repeatedly insulting his wife’s cooking, calling the meals “poisonous,” and for failing to provide kitchen supplies. The court deemed the wife less culpable. The decision granted the divorce, awarded custody of the couple’s child to the father, and ordered material and moral damages of 50,000 TL each, alongside monthly alimony of 750 TL. The ruling establishes a precedent that verbal abuse related to domestic duties, such as disparaging a spouse’s meals, is a significant factor in fault determination in Turkish family law.
