YKS exam pressure fuels student anxiety and prompts university support initiatives
Prof. Dr. Pınar Kurt Combil of Beykoz University explained that social media heightens anxiety among students during Turkey's university entrance exams (YKS), noting that “social media mostly shows successes while struggles remain invisible, leading students to think ‘Everyone is better prepared than me’.” She described how heightened worry impairs working memory and suggested quick coping tactics such as 4‑6 breathing, physical relaxation, mental anchoring and skipping difficult questions.
University rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Fazıl Özsoylu addressed the upcoming YKS by inviting prospective students and their families to tour the campus, meet staff and learn about programs, scholarships and facilities, emphasizing the importance of familiarising candidates with university life before the exam.
Psychologist Burcu Amcaoğlu added practical advice, urging students not to study new topics the day before the test, to focus on known material, practice deep‑breath exercises, maintain sleep and nutrition, and limit screen time. She also highlighted the role of parents, recommending they avoid projecting their own anxieties and instead offer calm, supportive encouragement.
