Turkey's YÖK Introduces Precision Agriculture Robotics Program
The Higher Education Council (YÖK) announced that climate change, limited natural resources and rapid digitalisation are driving agriculture and livestock into a new era centred on robotics and autonomous systems. Traditional production methods are deemed insufficient, prompting the adoption of smart sensors, data analytics, autonomous equipment, and intelligent greenhouse and barn models.
Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University has created a Department of Precision Agriculture and Agricultural Robotics that combines artificial intelligence, computer science and robotics to train professionals equipped for the sector’s digital transformation. Students receive both theoretical instruction and hands‑on experience with smart greenhouse systems, precision crop production and automated livestock facilities.
YÖK President Erol Özvar stressed that agriculture’s future depends on technology, stating, "We will continue to train experts who will shape the future of agriculture," and added that "the most important factor determining competitiveness in agriculture will be knowledge and technology." The programme aims to supply qualified human resources to enhance Turkey’s food‑security, economic development and sustainable production goals.
