Turkish 10‑Year‑Old Öykü Öntürk Collects 10,000 Blue Caps for Wheelchair Aid

Ten‑year‑old Öykü Öntürk, a student from Denizli, Turkey, spent two years gathering 10,000 blue plastic bottle caps after learning that a collection of caps can fund a wheelchair for a person with a physical disability. In July, she delivered the caps to the Muhittin Mahallesi Muhtarlığı in Çorlu, Tekirdağ, where local officials said the caps will be used to obtain a wheelchair for an eligible disabled citizen.

Muhtarlık head Zührecan Gözaydın praised Öntürk’s effort, calling it an exemplary display of social responsibility despite her age and expressing hope that the caps will soon provide a wheelchair for a community member.
