Yusuf Aydemir sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in Leyla Aydemir murder case

The Ağrı 1st Heavy Penal Court concluded the re‑trial of the 2018 Leyla Aydemir murder. Un‑cle Yusuf Aydemir, who had been in pre‑trial detention, was convicted of "killed with premeditation" and sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, with an additional six‑year term for depriving a person of liberty. The court affirmed that all evidence, witness statements and procedural material were examined according to the principle of free evaluation of evidence.

The six co‑accused – Mehmet Ali Aydemir, Besim Dursun, Hatun Dursun, Yıldırım Artam and Ayşe Artam – were found not guilty and acquitted on the grounds that the alleged crimes could not be proven against them. After the verdict, police intervened to disperse a family brawl that broke out in the courthouse courtyard. The decision, delivered on 26 June 2026, upholds previous appeals and keeps Yusuf Aydemir’s custodial status in force.
