Turkish and Tatar history in Romania explored by researcher
Researcher Metin Omer has provided a historical overview of the Turkish and Tatar presence in Romania, specifically focusing on the Dobrogea region. The presence of these communities is linked to Ottoman rule and medieval migrations from the Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea basin.
Most Tatars in Romania are Crimean Tatars who arrived in Dobrogea in two major waves driven by Russian Empire expansion following the annexation of the Crimean Khanate in 1783 and the Crimean War (1853–1856). While both Turkish and Tatar communities share Islamic faith and Turkic-Tatar origins, they have followed distinct historical paths.
Historically, the Muslim community transitioned from a dominant class under Ottoman rule to an ethnic minority within a Christian-Orthodox Romanian state following the return of Dobrogea to Romania in 1878. Despite this shift, the Romanian state has guaranteed religious and property freedoms, with historical figures like Selim Abdulakim demonstrating the integration of the community into modern Romanian state structures.
