Turkish artists transform waste and natural debris into art
In İslahiye, Gaziantep, 73-year-old retiree Sefer Ateşalioğlu is transforming natural and discarded materials into art. After a three-year hiatus following the February 6, 2023, earthquakes, Ateşalioğlu has returned to wood-working. He uses a wood-burning technique to create portraits from tree branches and wood scraps collected from forests, streets, and construction sites. Additionally, he repurposes discarded plastic pipes into decorative lamps.
In Antalya, 56-year-old Kürşat Gür has spent approximately 30 years practicing upcycling art. Since establishing a professional workshop in 2006, Gür has produced over 200 works. His art utilizes electronic waste, including computer circuit boards, old video devices, drills, and vacuum cleaners, to create various figures and aesthetic objects.
