Mehmet Fatih Tançalan arrested in Turkish money laundering probe

Mehmet Fatih Tançalan, known as “Vanlı Kara Haydar,” has been arrested on charges of laundering assets derived from criminal activities. The investigation follows a luxury wedding in Van, where the bride, social media influencer Çağla Öz, was displayed with jewelry and gold reportedly valued at approximately 45 million Turkish Liras.

A report from the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) revealed a significant discrepancy between the couple's declared income and their lifestyle. While Tançalan reported a total commercial profit of only 74,281 TL since 2020, the couple's combined bank transfer volume exceeded 222 million TL. The report highlighted an “unexplainable increase in wealth” and noted that Tançalan's reported income was significantly lower than even a continuous minimum wage worker.

Authorities are also investigating the ownership and transfer of luxury vehicles, including brands such as Porsche and Maserati. While Tançalan claimed the wedding gold was borrowed from a jeweler and that his income was derived via “mail order” from Dubai, MASAK found no evidence of direct financial transfers from abroad to their Turkish accounts.

The investigation has expanded to include Çağla Öz, for whom an arrest warrant has been issued, and her mother, who was detained in Istanbul. Other individuals mentioned in the MASAK report have also been taken into custody.
