Turkish authorities launch investigation after 52 storks die from electrocution

Following the deaths of 52 storks and injuries to five others due to electrocution near Küçükçekmece Lake in Istanbul, the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) has launched an investigation and mitigation plan. The birds, which are on a migratory route between Europe and Africa, reportedly came into contact with electrification facilities along the railway line.

TCDD announced it will collaborate with universities and relevant institutions to scientifically study the flight behaviors and migration routes of these birds to improve existing protective measures. Efforts include increasing the use of ‘bird deterrent’ apparatus on power poles and identifying high-risk points for intervention. The agency is also investigating whether changes in migration patterns have led to increased interaction with the railway infrastructure.

Simultaneously, WWF-Turkey has issued an urgent call for the isolation of power lines to protect migratory species. The organization highlighted that large-winged birds, such as storks and vultures, are particularly vulnerable to electrocution while soaring. WWF-Turkey urged distribution companies and relevant authorities to take immediate action to insulate lines and make them more visible to prevent further wildlife fatalities.
