Gaziantep waste‑to‑energy greenhouse yields 28 ton of organic produce

The Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality’s solid‑waste storage site processes about 2,000 tonnes of municipal waste each day. Heat recovered from the waste‑to‑energy plant powers a modern hydroponic greenhouse operated by Gazişehir Energy AŞ in the Şahinbey district. The facility produces roughly 20 tonnes of tomatoes and 8 tonnes of strawberries annually – a total of 28 tonnes of organic food. All harvests are distributed free of charge to residents aged 65 and over.

Mayor Fatma Şahin highlighted the project as a key element of the city’s climate‑master plan, noting that Gaziantep now ranks among the world’s 20 cities closest to zero‑waste and aims to enter the top three. The plant generates about 3 MW of electricity and 13.5 MW of heat, supporting the city’s preparation for COP31.

The initiative showcases how waste‑derived energy can be reused for sustainable urban agriculture and social welfare.
