Turkish comedian sentenced to prison for criticizing President Erdoğan

A Turkish court has sentenced comedian Deniz Göktaş to 19 months and 10 days in prison following a comedy performance in which he criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Göktaş was found guilty of insulting the president and making statements deemed offensive to religious values.

During the performance, which garnered approximately 9.5 million views on YouTube, Göktaş referred to Erdoğan as a “shameful dictator.” The comedian has denied criminal intent, arguing that his remarks were part of political satire and humor. He stated during his defense that the issue lies in how political leaders react to criticism rather than the existence of the laws themselves.

Authorities received 185 complaints regarding the performance. Although sentenced, Göktaş has been released pending an appeal process, meaning he will not serve the prison term immediately. The case has reignited debates in Turkey regarding the boundaries of satire and the legislation used to protect the head of state from insult.
