Turkish Court overturns life sentence in Semih Dizbay murder case

The Court of Cassation General Assembly has overturned the life imprisonment sentence of Muharrem H. in the Semih Dizbay murder case. The decision has led to the immediate release of the defendant, provided he is not held for other crimes.

Semih Dizbay disappeared in October 2006 in İzmir's Konak district and his remains were discovered in a forested area in Bornova in January 2008. Following a lengthy legal process that included previous acquittals and a subsequent life sentence upheld by the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, the General Assembly reviewed the case following an objection by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

The General Assembly ruled that the evidence was insufficient to prove the crime, finding the previous conviction unlawful. The case file has been returned to the İzmir 9th High Criminal Court for a retrial.
