Turkish court transfers medical death trial to heavy penal court

A Turkish court has transferred the trial of 10 defendants involved in the death of Gülşah Gizem Angı to a heavy penal court. Angı, a 32-year-old doctoral student at Akdeniz University, died during a myoma surgery in 2022 at the Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Hospital.

During the sixth hearing at the Antalya 15th Criminal Court of First Instance, the judge ruled that the case might constitute “conscious negligence causing death” rather than simple negligence. Consequently, the file was sent to the heavy penal court for further evaluation of evidence.

The victim's family expressed hope for justice following the decision. The family's lawyer, Onur Şahin, argued that the incident was not a simple medical error but a chain of negligence involving the use of an unverified demo device for which medical personnel had not received proper training.
