Turkish Crime Boss Ramazan Bayğara Extradition Sparks Prison Riot in Greece

Greek authorities transferred Ramazan Bayğara, the alleged leader of the “Bayğaralar” criminal network, to Turkey after an Interpol red‑notice request. While he was being moved from Korydallos Prison in Athens, around 30 inmates erected a barricade and set fire to mattresses, sparking a violent uprising.

Greek police, special‑operations units and fire crews intervened, extinguishing the blaze and restoring order by mid‑day. One report said the incident caused no injuries, while other media outlets claimed three prisoners were killed and about 20 were wounded. An administrative investigation into the prison disturbance was launched, and Bayğara was subsequently flown to Turkey under heavy security.

The episode highlighted tensions between Greece and Turkey over the handling of high‑profile criminal extraditions and raised concerns about prison security in Greece.
