Turkish diaspora spending declines due to rising costs

Rising living costs and inflation are significantly impacting the spending habits and travel patterns of the Turkish diaspora living in Europe. According to Sebahattin Tekin, President of the European Turks Culture and Education Solidarity Platform, there has been a noticeable decline in the number of expatriates visiting regions such as Emirdağ and Eskişehir, particularly from Belgium.

High prices for goods, services, and travel, including expensive flight tickets, have deterred many from making traditional investments in real estate or gold. Furthermore, younger generations are increasingly opting for more affordable holiday destinations such as Spain, Albania, Italy, Greece, and the Czech Republic rather than visiting Turkey.

In Sivas, local tradesmen are reporting a decrease in expected revenue from visiting expatriates. Hakan Demirgil, President of the Sivas Chamber of Tradesmen and Craftsmen, noted that while older generations used to stay for months, the younger generation tends to visit briefly for family reasons before heading to coastal resort areas like Antalya. This shift, combined with global economic pressures and reduced purchasing power, has led to lower demand in sectors such as food and clothing.
