Turkish doctors warn of skin cancer risk from inadequate sun protection

Doctors at Izmir City Hospital, including Dermatology specialist Doç. Dr. Meltem Türkmen and Ophthalmology specialist Dr. Emrah Utku Kabataş, said sunscreen and sunglasses are health necessities, not accessories, and should be used throughout the year. They advised applying at least two finger‑lengths of broad‑spectrum sunscreen to the face and neck and emphasized that both UVA and UVB rays cause skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Medical Park Göztepe Hospital’s plastic‑reconstructive surgeon Dr. Emrah Köksal added that long‑term, unprotected sun exposure, chronic wounds and genetic factors are major contributors to skin tumours. He warned that non‑healing lesions, changes in moles or repeated bleeding may signal cancer and require prompt medical assessment. Early diagnosis allows smaller surgical interventions. Köksal also recommended additional protection such as wide‑brim hats, protective clothing, shade and avoiding peak sun hours, especially for children who suffered severe sunburns.
