Turkish education unions face legal and administrative disputes

Two separate incidents involving education unions in Turkey have led to legal disputes and calls for investigations. In Gaziantep, the Türk Eğitim-Sen union issued a statement defending Mustafa Acar, a branch vice president and school principal, against allegations of physical and verbal violence circulating on social media. The union expressed serious objections to the accusations, stating that they have evidence and witness statements to contest the claims. They emphasized that an individual's reputation should not be sacrificed to social media allegations before a formal legal judgment is reached.

In Izmir's Bornova district, a delegation from the Eğitim-Sen union was prevented from entering Sait Güzelcan Middle School by police and security guards. The union claims the visit was planned within constitutional rights and with the knowledge of school management. The confrontation resulted in the detention of a school vice principal who supported the union's right to enter, as well as fines imposed on union officials. Eğitim-Sen has indicated it will pursue legal action, citing Article 118 of the Turkish Penal Code regarding the obstruction of union activities.
