Turkish Embassy donates Piri Reis map replica to Faro a Colón

The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in the Dominican Republic has donated a replica of the famous Piri Reis world map to the Faro a Colón. The donation ceremony was led by Turkish Ambassador Emriye Bağdagül Ormancı, alongside Joan Ferrer, Director General of Museums representing the Ministry of Culture, and Eliezer Nolasco, Director of the Faro a Colón Museum.

Ambassador Ormancı stated that the initiative aims to enrich the cultural heritage of the Faro a Colón and introduce the public to the history of Piri Reis and the importance of cartography. She also reaffirmed the friendship and cooperation between Türkiye and the Dominican Republic.

Created in 1513 by the Ottoman admiral, navigator, and cartographer Piri Reis, the original map is a significant piece in maritime history. The map was produced shortly after Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World and utilized various geographical sources from that era, including maps related to Columbus.
